Georgia O’Connor, a rising star in British boxing, has died at 25 after claiming doctors dismissed her cancer symptoms for months. Tributes pour in from the boxing world.
Tragic news has shaken the boxing world as Georgia O’Connor, a promising 25-year-old boxer from Durham, UK, has died after a heartbreaking battle with cancer — one she says was ignored by doctors for months.
O’Connor, a decorated amateur and former Team GB star, rose to fame after winning gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017. But earlier this year, she revealed in a raw and emotional Instagram post that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, following a prior diagnosis of ulcerative colitis.
“There’s really no easy way to say this, but I have cancer,” she wrote back in January. “Now that’s out the way, it’s time to expose the absolute incompetent RATS that have allowed this to happen.”
Georgia claimed she spent 17 weeks in “constant pain,” desperately seeking help. She visited hospitals and doctors over and over, explaining her symptoms and her heightened cancer risk due to her pre-existing conditions — ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
“But not one doctor f***ing listened to me,” she said in her post. “Not one doctor took me seriously. Not one doctor did the scans or blood tests I begged for whilst crying on the floor in agony.”
She detailed how her concerns were dismissed, minimized, or outright ignored — one doctor even reportedly told her it was “all in her head.”
Her condition deteriorated rapidly. Not only had the cancer spread, but Georgia revealed that blood clots were also found in her lungs — a potentially fatal complication. She didn’t hold back in expressing her anger at the system she felt had failed her.
“They could have done something before it got to this stage,” she said. “They can say it’s terminal all they want… after taking 17, SEVENTEEN weeks to even figure out what was wrong with me, why the f*** should I believe them?”
Despite the devastating diagnosis, Georgia kept sharing her journey with brutal honesty and inspiring strength. After suffering a miscarriage and enduring aggressive illness, she still found moments of light. She celebrated her 25th birthday with hope and resilience and married her partner, Adriano, just two weeks before her passing.
“09.05.2025. The day I married the love of my life,” she wrote in what would become her final Instagram post.
Since news of her passing broke, the boxing community has been mourning the loss of a true fighter. Promoter Ben Shalom’s Boxxer said:
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O’Connor. A true warrior inside and outside the ring… the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon.”
World champion Ellie Scotney, who had been close with O’Connor for a decade, called her “the most beautiful human.”
“Even when life was on a timer, you never let anything dim that light of yours,” she said. “There was nothing you couldn’t do.”
England Boxing also paid tribute, describing her as a “gifted boxer” and a “beloved member of the amateur boxing community.”
Georgia O’Connor’s passing is not only a tragic loss for the sport — it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of being heard, believed, and taken seriously, especially in matters of health.
