Former Dallas Cowboys Running Back Duane Thomas Passes Away at 77
Duane Thomas, who played a crucial role in the Dallas Cowboys’ first Super Bowl victory, has died at 77. Learn about his career highlights and legacy.
Bollywood Fever: Duane Thomas, a former running back who played a pivotal role in helping the Dallas Cowboys win their first Super Bowl, has died at the age of 77, the team confirmed to numerous outlets on Tuesday. The cause of death has not been reported.
Thomas had an impressive career with the Cowboys, especially notable during the 1971 season. Playing in 11 games, 10 as a starter, he rushed for 793 yards and led the league with 11 touchdowns. He also contributed 13 receptions for 153 yards and two scores. In the 1971 postseason, Thomas added a combined 205 yards and three touchdowns, including 95 yards and a score in the Cowboys’ 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI.

Despite his on-field success, Thomas was known for periods of discontent, which led to attempted trades. After his rookie season in 1970, during which he rushed for 803 yards and added 313 yards in the postseason, he demanded a contract restructuring. The Cowboys’ efforts to trade him to the New England Patriots before the 1971 season were voided by the commissioner when Thomas refused to report.
Thomas was known for his reticence, often avoiding communication with teammates and the media. Hollywood Henderson, a former teammate, recalled, “I slept six feet from him and he didn’t have much to say. He was a peaceful man.”
After the 1971 season, the Cowboys successfully traded Thomas to the San Diego Chargers, but he again refused to report and sat out the 1972 season. He eventually joined the Washington Redskins, where he played in 1973-74, accumulating 442 yards and five touchdowns on 127 rushes over two seasons.
Thomas’s career, marked by both brilliance and controversy, left a lasting impact on the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys. His contributions to the Cowboys’ first Super Bowl victory remain a significant part of his legacy.
