French Designer Claude Montana Passed Away at 76
BollywoodFever, February 24: Renowned French fashion icon Claude Montana has passed away at the age of 76.
His death was confirmed by the French news agency AFP on Friday, February 23, with reports indicating he died in his hometown of Paris, according to Women’s Wear Daily.
Although Montana had maintained a low profile in recent years, his influence on the fashion world remains undeniable.
He emerged as a trailblazer in avant-garde design during the late 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, standing alongside esteemed peers such as Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Montana solidified his position as a leader in leather fashion following his debut fashion show in 1976 and subsequently established his eponymous fashion house, The House of Montana, in 1979.
From 1990 to 1992, he lent his creative vision to Lanvin couture. Today, his label is under the ownership of businessman Jean-Jacques Layani.
Known for his signature “power-woman” aesthetic, Montana’s designs often featured bold hues, sharp tailoring, and exaggerated silhouettes, characterized by padded shoulders and flared pants.
His muses included supermodels Helena Christensen, Tyra Banks, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista.
Montana was married to supermodel Wallis Franken from 1993 until her tragic death in 1996, ruled a suicide after she fell from a window.
Reflecting on Montana’s legacy, Bruno Pavlovsky, president of the French fashion federation, praised his exceptional craftsmanship and daring creations, which influenced an entire generation of designers.
Pascal Morand, the organization’s executive president, described Montana as a visionary who constantly pushed the boundaries of fashion, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and inspiring generations to come.
