NBC has canceled Mike O’Malley’s Extended Family after its first season, while renewing Night Court and Lopez vs. Lopez for third seasons and giving a series order to Happy’s Place, starring Reba McEntire.
The comedy followed Jim (Jon Cryer) and Julia (Abigail Spencer), who, after an amicable divorce, continue to raise their kids together while taking turns staying in the family home. Things get complicated for Jim when the owner of his favorite sports team (Donald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart.
The first season, which concluded in March with 13 episodes, received mixed reviews.
Extended Family had an unconventional path to air. It received a pilot order in May 2022, with Cryer set to star. Faison and Spencer joined in June 2022, and the project was picked up to series in September 2022. The show premiered in December 2023 but faced disruptions due to the writers and actors strikes last year.
Six episodes were completed before the strike, with seven more produced afterward. The show resumed production four days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
O’Malley, who serves as showrunner and executive producer, expressed optimism about a second season earlier this year but acknowledged the uncertainty in the industry. He praised the cast and crew for their work on the show.
