Bollywood Fever: A Nepali court has sentenced Ram Bahadur Bamjon, a man once hailed by thousands as a reincarnation of the Buddha, to 10 years in prison for child sexual abuse. The sentencing was announced on Monday by a court official.
Bamjon, who garnered international attention as a teenager in 2005 when tens of thousands of people flocked to see him meditate under a tree in southeastern Nepal for nearly 10 months, has now been convicted of serious crimes.
Sikinder Kaapar, a court official from the Sarlahi district court in southern Nepal, stated that the judge also ordered Bamjon, 33, to pay $3,750 in compensation to the victim.
Bamjon, who was arrested at a house on the outskirts of Kathmandu in January, could not be reached for comment. However, his lawyer, Dilip Kumar Jha, indicated that they would appeal the decision in a higher court.
This case marks a significant fall from grace for Bamjon, who had once been revered by many as the “Buddha Boy.”
