Olivia Rodrigo Ends Allowing Distribution of Contraceptives at Her Guts World Tour Concerts
Emergency contraceptives will no longer be distributed at Olivia Rodrigo‘s Guts World Tour concerts, as reported by Variety. The decision affects local abortion funds, which have been informed that they cannot distribute free emergency birth control pills and other reproductive health resources during the tour.
Jade Hurley, Communications Manager for the DC Abortion Fund, expressed hope for a reversal of this decision before their event on July 20th, stating, “The #GUTSWorldTour has requested that abortion funds refrain from bringing emergency contraception (EC), condoms, or lubricant to tour locations.”
Rodrigo had previously announced a partnership with local chapters of the National Network of Abortion Funds to support those affected by systemic barriers to healthcare. This collaboration was part of her broader initiative, Fund 4 Good, aimed at supporting women and girls’ rights, education, and reproductive healthcare.
Since the tour began on February 23, attendees at various concerts, including one in Missouri where abortion laws are strict, received free contraceptives like Plan B pills and condoms. A fan known as Kin expressed gratitude on X (formerly Twitter) for the contraceptives provided at Rodrigo’s St. Louis concert.
The Missouri Abortion Fund highlighted the importance of providing such resources to ensure individuals have control over their reproductive health. They appreciated Rodrigo’s efforts in raising awareness and support for abortion funds at a time when donations have dwindled.
However, following recent media attention, Rodrigo’s team, through communication relayed by the National Network of Abortion Funds, decided to halt the distribution of contraceptives at her concerts due to the presence of children. The DC Abortion Fund’s Hurley remarked on the legality and necessity of access to contraceptives for youth across all states.
Despite the cessation of Plan B, lubricant, and condoms distribution at Rodrigo’s concerts, the Prairie Abortion Fund intends to continue providing information at upcoming events, including Rodrigo’s concert in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The emergency contraceptive brand Julie, which was distributed at Rodrigo’s concerts, is an over-the-counter product. It was launched in response to Roe v. Wade being overturned, with a mission to change the conversation around emergency contraception and improve access for those in need.
Julie’s spokesperson expressed gratitude towards Rodrigo for her support in promoting access and education around emergency contraception. Fans have also shown their support for Rodrigo’s initial initiative on social media, praising her for her partnership and expressing excitement for her concerts.
