Congo’s president announced that over 80 travelers have perished after their boat capsized on a river near the capital, Kinshasa.
This tragic incident is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents in the central African nation, where overloading is a common issue.
A statement from President Félix Tshisekedi indicated that the locally made boat overturned late Monday in Maï-Ndombe province while carrying more than 100 passengers along the Kwa River. Such accidents are frequent in Congo’s waters due to vessels often being loaded beyond their capacity.
“The President of the Republic is calling for an investigation into the true causes of this unfortunate incident, to prevent such a disaster from happening again in the future,” the presidency stated on X.
The Head of State Félix Tshisekedi said he was devastated by the tragedy of the shipwreck which occurred on the Kwa River, 70 kilometers from the city of Mushie, in the province of Maï-Ndombe, the provisional toll of which shows more than 80 dead.
He sends his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. He instructs the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to help those affected by this disaster.
