Convicted serial killer Rose West, now 71, lives in isolation under the alias Jennifer Jones at HMP New Hall, where inmates continue to shun her despite her frailty and attempts to fit in.
Rose West may go by a different name behind bars, but her past still casts a long shadow.
The 71-year-old serial killer, who now goes by Jennifer Jones, has been serving a life sentence at HMP New Hall, a women-only prison in West Yorkshire. Despite legally changing her name in 2020, West remains one of the most reviled inmates in the UK—and it shows in her daily prison life.
West has reportedly become increasingly frail, struggling to walk and relying on a disabled-access room. “She never really leaves the wing she’s held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere,” a source shared with The Sun. “Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own.”

Despite the new name, fellow prisoners haven’t forgotten her horrific crimes. Convicted in 1995 of murdering twelve women and girls with her husband Fred West, Rose has spent the past six years largely isolated. According to insiders, she eats alone in her cell most mornings—usually tomato soup—and fills her days knitting and watching bird documentaries.
“She tried to make friends by giving out gifts like vapes,” the source added, “but she was rejected. Everyone knows who she is.”
Though she still claims she’s innocent, West is reportedly resigned to spending the rest of her life in prison. Her husband Fred died by suicide in 1995 while awaiting trial, leaving Rose to face justice alone for a series of murders carried out in the 1970s and 1980s—many of them at their infamous Gloucester home.
Interest in her crimes has spiked again following the release of Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story on Netflix. The documentary has reignited public horror over the couple’s gruesome past, including the murder of their own daughter Heather and Rose’s stepdaughter Charmaine.

West’s current life behind bars is described as both quiet and unsettling. While she’s been moved multiple times for her own safety, her behavior hasn’t gone unnoticed. “She can be quite abusive to officers if she doesn’t get what she wants,” said the source. “She’s very set in her ways. If something doesn’t happen fast enough, she gets in a mood.”
Inmates have allegedly seen her talking to her TV, and while she rarely interacts with others, she deliberately sits in shared spaces “just to annoy” them. “She still looks the same,” said the insider. “Her hair is grey now, and she’s put on some weight, but she still wears her glasses.”
Despite having no visitors, West continues to receive fan mail from disturbed admirers on the outside—letters that are carefully screened by prison staff. And while her physical health is deteriorating, the shadow of her crimes ensures she remains one of the most infamous figures in Britain’s criminal history.
Shockingly, West has refused to cooperate with authorities in locating the remains of up to 20 rumored additional victims, continuing to withhold answers that families of the missing have waited decades to hear.
