South Africa Captain Bavuma to Sit Out Second Test Against India
South Africa’s cricket captain, Temba Bavuma, will be sidelined for the upcoming second test against India due to a hamstring injury sustained in the first test. The initial victory for South Africa by an innings and 32 runs at Centurion on Thursday was marred by Bavuma’s reoccurrence of an old injury as he pursued a boundary-bound ball on the opening day, leading him to leave the pitch for scans that revealed a tear.
Despite the team’s need for additional batting support on Thursday, Bavuma was unable to bat when Marco Jansen sought a partner to help him secure a maiden test century. Jansen was left stranded on 84 as the ninth wicket fell in South Africa’s first innings, totaling 408 runs.
Dean Elgar, honored as the man of the match for his impressive 185 runs in Centurion, will take the helm as South Africa’s leader in what is set to be his final test match. Elgar recently announced his international retirement after the conclusion of the two-test series.
Expressing concern for Bavuma’s physical condition, South Africa’s head coach, Shukri Conrad, informed reporters that they perceived a potential risk of aggravating the injury, prompting Bavuma’s exclusion from the second test. Bavuma’s injury will be reassessed in two weeks.
To bolster the squad, Zubayr Hamza has been included as cover in anticipation of the upcoming test against India.
