Tragic End to Search for Missing British Teen Jay Slater in Tenerife

Spanish authorities confirm the discovery of British teenager Jay Slater’s body after a month-long search in Tenerife. Initial reports suggest an accidental fall.

Bollywood Fever: The search for British teenager Jay Slater, who vanished while on his first holiday with friends in Tenerife, has ended tragically with the discovery of human remains. Spanish authorities confirmed on Monday that the body of the 19-year-old was found in the Masca area, after 29 days of relentless searching by the Civil Guard.

“After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area. The discovery has been possible thanks to the tireless and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard over these 29 days,” a spokesman for the Civil Guard stated. “Everything is pointing to the body being that of the young British man who disappeared on June 17, pending full identification. Initial inquiries are pointing to him having suffered an accident/fall in the area where he was found.”

The discovery was made by Civil Guard officers from the mountain rescue division, with evidence indicating that Slater had died due to an accidental fall in the rough and inaccessible terrain where he was found.

Ongoing Search for Missing Teen Jay Slater in Tenerife: Timeline and Updates

Jay Slater, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been on the island with two friends for a three-day music festival. He was last seen on the night of June 17, when he separated from his friends and left a rave with two British men he had befriended. He traveled with them to an Airbnb in the remote village of Masca, before attempting to head back on foot when there were no buses. He called a friend to say he was lost and had only 1% battery left on his phone.

“Thanks to the unceasing and constant search carried out by the different units of the Civil Guard, in which it has not stopped to look for the young man every day in the area of Masca, where he allegedly had disappeared the GREIM officers have found the dead body of the young person in a very inaccessible area,” a Civil Guard spokesperson added. “The results of the autopsy are awaiting confirmation that it is an accident.”

Search for Missing Brit Jay Slater in Tenerife Ends After Nearly Two Weeks

The discovery brought an end to the month-long search, during which Jay’s family and volunteers scoured the rugged area, hoping for his safe return. His mother, Alexis Dominguez, who had been vocal throughout the search, expressed her devastation. “Clearly The Children’s Courtyard did not value my son’s safety or express concern for his well-being,” she said. “Anyone with basic common sense understands that smothering and hitting a child is completely unacceptable.”

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission Child-Care Licensing Division and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services investigated the incident, citing the daycare for five violations, including the abuse of the child and failure to report the incident.

In response to the tragic discovery, Jay’s family expressed their grief and frustration. His father, Warren Slater, and brother Zak, were actively involved in the search, combing the area near where his phone was last pinged. Jay’s mother, Alexis, said she was living a nightmare while searching for her son, with the family having to deal with unhelpful and sometimes malicious theories and speculation.

Emergency workers widened their search after Jay’s phone data showed his last known location near Masca, including a ravine 100 meters below the rental property where he was last seen. The investigation also involved reported sightings of Jay, although many were baseless.

The search took a turn when it emerged that one of the men Jay had been with at the Airbnb was a convicted drug dealer, although there was no evidence linking his disappearance to drugs. Both men were eliminated from the inquiry in the second week.

Jay’s dad Warren, 58, brother Zak, 24, and uncle Glen Duncan, 41, were among the family members who continued to search despite Spanish police officially ending their efforts on June 30. Glen Duncan described Jay as a “typical, normal 19-year-old lad” who was family-oriented and had a large circle of friends. “He’s just a typical great young lad with a massive circle of friends and was looking forward to coming here,” Duncan said. “It’s just torture.”

The tragic end to the search for Jay Slater has left his family and friends in mourning, as they remember a young man with a bright future ahead of him.
