The United States men’s soccer team struck early and decisively in their second group stage game against New Zealand, securing a vital victory that ensures their safety in the Paris Olympic Games. With the threat of early elimination looming, the Americans delivered a commanding performance, converting an early penalty and adding two more goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead.

Maintaining their momentum, the U.S. team continued their strong play into the second half, with Paxten Aaronson scoring before New Zealand managed to pull one back, resulting in a 4-1 final score. This victory marks the most dominant win by an American men’s team at the Olympics, positioning them second in Group A.

The game saw an early breakthrough with the Americans converting a penalty, followed by a quick double advantage just four minutes later. A free kick taken by Mihailovic was whipped into the box, where Duncan McGuire’s header found Harriel. Although his shot was saved, Walker Zimmerman was on hand to poke the ball home, making it 2-0.

The third goal came at the half-hour mark from a strong run by John Tolkin. His pass into the box found Kevin Paredes, who was brought down, but no penalty was awarded. Gianluca Busio’s initial shot was blocked, but his second attempt found the net, extending the lead to 3-0.

In the second half, Griffin Yow, substituting for McGuire, made an immediate impact. Yow’s impressive run following a turnover set up Aaronson, who curled the ball into the net, achieving a historic fourth goal for the U.S. men’s soccer team at the Olympics.

Late in the match, substitutes Yow and Benjamin Cremaschi had chances that were ruled offside and narrowly missed, respectively. New Zealand’s Jesse Randall scored a consolation goal with a perfect spin-and-shot, but it was too late for a comeback.

The Americans held firm to secure their most dominant U-23 team win at the Olympics. With this victory, they now sit second in their group and could advance with a win in their next game against Guinea on Tuesday.
