Caitlin Clark Leads Indiana Fever to Thrilling Victory
Caitlin Clark shines in Indiana Fever’s dramatic 98-89 win over Phoenix Mercury, setting a WNBA rookie record while overcoming a 28-point lead collapse.
Bollywood Fever: Caitlin Clark made a triumphant return to the WNBA on Friday night, leading the Indiana Fever to a thrilling 98-89 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. Despite facing three USA Olympic gold medal winners, Clark’s performance was pivotal in securing the win, even as the Fever saw a dramatic 28-point lead evaporate at one point.
Clark was unstoppable in the first half, quickly shaking off the rust from her month-long break after the Paris Games. By halftime, she had racked up 16 points, helping the Fever build a commanding 48-20 lead. However, the Mercury, led by Kahleah Copper, mounted a fierce comeback in the third quarter, briefly taking a one-point lead.

Indiana, however, rallied in the final moments to secure a crucial victory in their playoff push, improving their season record to 12-15. Clark ended the night with 29 points and made history as the first rookie in WNBA history to record over 450 points and 200 assists in a single season.
The game was a testament to the determination of both teams. Copper, Brittney Griner, and Diana Taurasi had only just returned from winning gold in Paris and played a grueling game on Thursday night against the Chicago Sky and Angel Reese. Despite their fatigue, they pushed the Fever to the brink in a nail-biting final quarter.
Clark also secured her 10th double-double of the season, leading the Fever to sweep the three-game series against Phoenix in front of a sold-out crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Reflecting on the game, Clark acknowledged the team’s resilience: “We were incredible, we had a few lapses that didn’t look very pretty for us but we always found a way to respond.”

Clark, who humorously admitted feeling a bit rusty after her break, was ably supported by Kelsey Mitchell, who added 28 points to the Fever’s total. “I called for a sub six minutes in. If I’m being honest, I was like, holy cow,” Clark said, highlighting the fast pace of the game.
Looking ahead, the Fever will face the Seattle Storm on Sunday as they aim to build on this momentum. Meanwhile, the Mercury, after a much-needed rest day, will prepare for their rematch against Reese and the Chicago Sky.
The battle for WNBA Rookie of the Year is heating up, with both Clark and Reese making strong cases. Reese set her own franchise record with the Chicago Sky on Thursday night, surpassing Sylvia Fowles’ 2013 total for offensive rebounds. However, with Clark leading Indiana to another critical win, she currently holds the advantage in this tightly contested race.
