Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reveals the club’s primary goal in the transfer window is to sell players to address financial concerns, rather than competing for top honors this season.
Bollywood Fever: Chelsea’s top priority in the current transfer window is to offload players from their squad to help balance the club’s finances, according to manager Enzo Maresca.
The West London club, which has been active in the transfer market since American owner Todd Boehly took over two years ago, faces the challenge of meeting the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Since Boehly’s arrival, Chelsea has spent over £160 million ($211.50 million) on 11 new signings for the current season, including notable players like winger Pedro Neto, forward Joao Felix, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Despite this, the club has only managed to sell a few players, such as Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid and defender Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa.
However, they still have over 40 senior players registered, putting them at risk of violating financial regulations.
“The target is to solve the economic problem in terms of selling players,” Maresca explained on the club’s website. “From there, we try to do our best and see where we arrive.”

Chelsea’s difficulties in offloading players have been well-documented, with several high-profile names like Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling among approximately 15 high earners who have been excluded from first-team training.
The club’s strategy has shifted to focus on financial stability rather than immediate competition for titles.
“For us, the target in this moment is to improve players. No one from the club asked me to compete for the Premier League, or compete for a Champions League spot,” Maresca added.
“I want to see my team play the way we want to play, and compete every game. I want to see on the ball a clear idea of what they want, and off the ball, a very aggressive team. The most important thing is to be better game after game.”
As Chelsea navigates this challenging period, the club’s focus remains on developing a cohesive and competitive team while addressing the financial concerns that have become a significant issue under the current ownership.
Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how Chelsea manages its squad and financial situation in the coming months.
