IMD Issues Red Alert as Delhi Heatwave Intensifies, Relief Expected Later This Week
The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi as temperatures soar past 44°C amid an ongoing heatwave. Relief is expected later this week with predicted rain and thunderstorms.
New Delhi, India, Bollywood Fever: The scorching heatwave gripping Delhi has intensified, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert, the highest level of warning. With temperatures soaring past 44°C, venturing outside has become increasingly challenging.
The red alert warns of an “extremely high likelihood” of heatstroke and heat illness for all ages. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and avoid non-essential travel, especially during the peak afternoon heat.
Delhi has been enduring relentless heat, with temperatures exceeding 40°C for 35 consecutive days and eight straight days of extreme heat. Sunday night marked the third consecutive “warm night,” with temperatures remaining uncomfortably high even after sunset.
However, some relief may be on the horizon. The IMD predicts a chance of rain and thunderstorms around Thursday and Friday (June 20 and 21). Additionally, a western disturbance approaching the region could bring a slight dip in temperatures by Thursday.
The usual relief provided by monsoon rains has been delayed, causing further frustration. While the monsoon typically reaches Delhi around mid-June, its progress has stalled. However, there’s a chance it might finally arrive around June 27, bringing much-needed respite from the heat.
In the meantime, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe. Limit strenuous outdoor activities, wear loose, light-colored clothing, and drink plenty of fluids. Here’s hoping the monsoon arrives soon to cool things down!
