Turkey Officially Seeks BRICS Membership to Expand Global Influence and Forge New Alliances
Turkey formally requests to join BRICS, aiming to strengthen global ties beyond the West while maintaining its NATO commitments. President Erdogan emphasizes balanced international relations.
Bollywood Fever: Turkey has officially requested to join the BRICS economic bloc, signaling a strategic move to broaden its global influence and form new alliances beyond its traditional Western partners.
The report, sourced from Tass, highlights Turkey’s ambition to enhance its role on the world stage as it navigates the shifting geopolitical landscape.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan underscored the importance of balanced international relations during a speech in Istanbul, emphasizing Turkey’s commitment to strengthening ties with both the East and West.
“We do not have to choose between the European Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as some people claim. On the contrary, we have to develop our relations with both these and other organizations on a win-win basis,” Erdogan stated.

This push comes as Turkey grows frustrated with the slow progress of its decades-long effort to join the European Union.
Nonetheless, Erdogan’s administration has made it clear that the move to seek BRICS membership is not an attempt to replace Western alliances, but rather to complement them.
Sinan Ülgen, head of the Istanbul-based think tank EDAM, explained that Turkey is strengthening its ties with non-Western powers as U.S. global dominance wanes.
BRICS, currently consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
The possibility of Turkey joining the group will likely be discussed at the upcoming summit in Kazan, Russia, in October, where the bloc’s future enlargement will be a key topic.
