Ryanair to Eliminate Airport Check-In Desks, Moving to Fully Digital Check-In by 2025
Ryanair plans to scrap traditional airport check-in desks, switching to a fully digital experience via its app by May 2025. CEO Michael O’Leary outlines the vision to streamline operations.
Bollywoodfever: Ryanair is set to revolutionize air travel by eliminating traditional airport check-in desks, pushing passengers towards a fully digital experience. According to CEO Michael O’Leary, the budget airline plans to scrap airport check-in counters entirely by May 2025, allowing passengers to check in solely via the Ryanair app.
During a press event in Dublin, O’Leary explained the reasoning behind the shift: “We will get rid of ticket desks and then there’s no reason to charge people for airport check-in. We want to move everything to the app, just like we did with bag check-in.” The airline boss emphasized that by 2025, 100% of Ryanair check-ins will be app-based, signaling the end of paper boarding passes and in-person check-ins.

Currently, 60% of Ryanair’s passengers use the app for check-in, and the airline aims to increase this figure to 80% by 2025. O’Leary acknowledged that while there may be challenges for some passengers, particularly the elderly or those without smartphone access, the airline will work on solutions to ease the transition.
Ryanair’s decision to eliminate check-in desks stems from the high costs associated with renting and staffing these areas for a small percentage of customers who fail to check in online. O’Leary reiterated that the policy is not about revenue generation but about streamlining operations and reducing airport inefficiencies.
