Sofía Vergara Reveals Reasons for Not Wanting More Children in Candid Interview
Sofía Vergara is elaborating on her decision not to have more children at this stage in her life.
The “Griselda” star Sofía Vergara, spoke with People for its cover this week and discussed how, following her split from Joe Manganiello, she considers it a dealbreaker if someone she is dating wants more children. She had previously disclosed in the Spanish newspaper El País that her ex-husband’s desire for more children played a significant role in their separation.

“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” she told the publication in a story published in January. “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.”
The “Modern Family” star further discussed this with People, highlighting that she finds the most joy in spending time with her only child due to their close mother-son relationship, which developed since she had him at a young age.
“I wish I was older sometimes because I would’ve been more mature, more prepared to be a mother, but that was what I got and what happened,” she said. “So I just kept going and try not to look back at it, because it is what it is. But it is fun because I kind of grew up together with my son.”
Vergara explained that sometimes things in life may seem like a good idea, but they’re not. For her, that was the idea of being a mother at 50. She added, “I know what it means to be a good mother or to try to be the best mother that you can, and that takes a lot of sacrifices, takes a lot of energy.”
While acknowledging that scientific advancements have made it easier for women today to have children later in life, Vergara noted that this was not natural for women before, and it was not what she wanted. However, she respects women who choose to become mothers later in life.
“I totally respect where anyone wants to be a mom after 50,” Vergara said. “I didn’t think because of my career, the way I live my life, the way my marriage was, that it was fair to bring a kid to this world, and I’m not going to be able to give 100 percent.”
Vergara and Manganiello announced their divorce in July 2023, after seven years of marriage. The couple met in May 2014 through Vergara’s “Modern Family” co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and got married in November 2015.
