An Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo experienced severe turbulence, leading to an emergency landing in Brazil. Thirty passengers were injured, with ten hospitalized.
Brazil, Bollywood Fever: An Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was forced to make an emergency landing in Brazil after encountering severe turbulence, resulting in injuries to 30 passengers. The flight, designated UX045, was en route from Madrid to Montevideo when the mid-air incident occurred, the airline reported.
The turbulence struck as the plane, carrying 325 passengers, neared the Brazilian coast over the Atlantic Ocean. Following the incident, the flight was diverted to Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil, where it landed without further complications and was immediately met by a fleet of ambulances.
Air Europa announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the injured passengers were receiving medical attention. Airport officials confirmed that several passengers required medical assistance and were transported to the nearest hospital.
Local medical teams informed Brazilian media that they attended to at least 30 passengers of various nationalities, with 10 individuals taken to the hospital. The injuries sustained included cranial fractures and facial cuts, primarily caused by passengers hitting their heads during the turbulence.
This incident follows a similar event weeks earlier involving a Singapore Airlines flight experiencing severe turbulence over Myanmar, resulting in numerous injuries and the death of a British passenger. While severe turbulence remains relatively rare, recent studies indicate that climate change may be increasing the frequency and intensity of such occurrences.
