Anthony Mundine Voices on Social Media: Spencer Leniu’s “Monkey” Comment Towards Broncos’ Ezra Mam Is “Not Racism”
Bollywoodfever, March 7: Anthony Mundine has expressed his views on social media regarding Spencer Leniu’s use of the term “monkey” towards Broncos’ Ezra Mam, stating it is “not racism.”
Leniu offered an apology to Mam, acknowledging on Thursday that he had used the term towards the Broncos’ playmaker during the Roosters’ victory in Las Vegas.
Mundine shared his thoughts through an Instagram video on Thursday evening, suggesting Mam should “take it on the chin.”
“I just wanted to put my 2c piece about the Ezra Mam controversy … I mean, it ain’t racism,” Mundine stated.
“When two brothers are brown or black fellas, you can slur each other, you call them a ‘black c’ or this and that, that’s what they are. It’s like African-American and another African-American calling each other the n-word.
“I think they toughen up in that sense. It’s not racism.
“A white fella saying it a black fella, that’s a different story. That’s a whole different kettle of fish. Then you can really say that’s blatant racism.
“But another black fella or brown fella saying it to another brown fella? Come on, bra.
“You’ve got to take it on the chin. That’s what we have done all our lives, growing up.”
Mundine, who transitioned from the NRL to boxing in 2000 after a 134-game career, citing racism as a factor, offers a perspective that contrasts with Souths’ Latrell Mitchell’s. Mitchell praised Mam on Instagram for “calling racism out.”
“Standing up for what you believe in his the hardest thing you could ever do. You will either be hated or loved for doing it,” Mitchell commented.
