At least 10 people, including an 8-year-old, were injured in a shooting at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The suspect is contained near the scene.
Bollywood Fever: At least 10 people were shot at a recreation area in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, according to police during a news conference. The shooting occurred at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, about 27 miles north of Detroit.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that “nine, maybe 10” victims were injured by gunfire. Among the victims was an 8-year-old child, although the ages of the other victims were not disclosed.
The first 911 call reporting the incident was made around 5:11 p.m. Authorities found a handgun and three empty magazines at the scene, indicating that the suspect fired “potentially 28 times.”
The suspect, who fired randomly upon arriving at the splash pad, is currently contained at an address near the crime scene. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook before the news conference, “We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills. That is still an active scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area.”
At around 5 p.m. on Saturday, a “random” gunman opened fire at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, shooting ten people. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that the gunman exited a vehicle and fired 28 shots from a handgun at the streetside park.
The incident took place at 1585 E. Auburn Road, as confirmed by the Rochester Police Department and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The gunman, armed with a 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun, fired, reloaded twice, and left three bullet magazines at the scene. The handgun and magazines were later recovered by the police.
Bouchard mentioned that there were nine or ten victims with “varying kinds of injuries,” including an eight-year-old child. The victims were transported to four area hospitals, with no known connection to the shooter.
A spokeswoman for Corewell Health, Chantele Telegadas, confirmed that some victims were treated at their facility, though no further details were provided.
The gunman was located in a home about half a mile from the park, and a SWAT team and armored vehicles were deployed. “It’s a gut punch, obviously, for us here in Oakland County,” Bouchard said, referencing the 2021 Oxford High School shooting.
Police quickly identified a suspect from evidence at the scene. Bouchard noted that they were trying to communicate with the suspect, who was believed to be contained in the house.
In nearby Shelby Township, police vehicles gathered near the Dequindre Estates mobile home park, close to the splash pad. Initially, it was reported there were five or six victims, with no confirmation on fatalities.
An emergency alert was issued to Rochester Hills residents warning of an active shooter near Spencer Park and advising them to seek shelter. Later, another alert lifted the shelter-in-place order but advised people to avoid the splash pad park.
The investigation, led by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, closed streets near the splash pad. Stephen Huber, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, stated, “We don’t know if there are any fatals, the conditions of victims, if they’re male, female, adults or children.”
