Explore the lifetime box office numbers of the 2023 film “Barbie,” including its domestic and overseas earnings. Delve into its global financial success and impact.
The 2023 American fantasy comedy film “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, takes its inspiration from the iconic Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel. This marks a significant departure from the string of computer-animated adaptations, presenting the first live-action portrayal of Barbie and Ken (Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling respectively).
The narrative revolves around their voyage of self-discovery, triggered by an existential crisis. The movie boasts a diverse ensemble cast including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
The inception of a live-action Barbie film was initially announced by Universal Pictures in September 2009, produced by Laurence Mark.
The project kicked into gear in April 2014 when Sony Pictures secured the film rights. The journey saw several changes in writers, directors, and even casting, with Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway initially considered for the role of Barbie.
Eventually, the rights found their way to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Margot Robbie was cast in 2019, stepping in after Gal Gadot’s scheduling conflicts prevented her from taking the role. In 2020, Gerwig was unveiled as the director and co-writer alongside Baumbach.
The remainder of the cast was revealed in early 2022. Principal photography unfolded mainly at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in England, as well as the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles, spanning from March to July 2022.
The film made its debut at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, before its theatrical release in the United States on July 21, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures. Its concurrent launch with Universal’s “Oppenheimer” led to a cultural sensation known as the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, encouraging audiences to enjoy both films as a double feature. Garnering widespread acclaim from critics, “Barbie” achieved a remarkable global box office of $1.28 billion in earnings, securing its place as the second highest-grossing film of 2023. Notably, it also stands as the top-grossing film directed solely by a woman and ranks as the 20th highest-grossing film of all time.
