California (Bollywood Fever): California’s cherished food critics, Allan Borgen and Isabelle Busse, tragically died in a car crash on Saturday while traveling to Missouri.
Allan Borgen, 75, a well-known Inland Empire restaurant critic who hosted various radio and TV food shows for decades, was with his “Let’s Dine Out” co-host and partner Isabelle Busse, 54, when their vehicle collided head-on with a semi-truck on Interstate 44, as reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The semi-truck crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in the fatal collision. According to the Los Angeles Times, Borgen, who was driving, died at the scene, while Busse was taken to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Residing in Redlands, Borgen and Busse were celebrated for their passion for food, co-hosting “Let’s Dine Out” weekly on KCAA.
KVCR Public Media, where Borgen worked for 32 years, confirmed his death on Monday. KCAA General Manager Mark Westwood and Chief Executive Fred Lundgren expressed their sorrow on Facebook, stating, “All of us at KCAA are deeply saddened at the tragic loss of our friends and fellow broadcasters. 4 p.m. on Saturdays will never be the same without ‘Let’s Dine Out.’ We will miss them greatly.”
The pair also organized monthly “Grub Club” dinners to engage with fellow food enthusiasts at local restaurants, where they reportedly first met, as noted by the New York Post.
Borgen, a retired social worker, began his career as a food critic in the 1990s and was known for his humor and collection of Hawaiian shirts. Speaking to Redland Daily Facts, a long-time friend of Busse reminisced, “She always had a really fun laugh; she was always up for anything,” and added, “Allan was just a sweet man, he always adored her.”
This tragic incident has left a void in the culinary world, and the duo will be deeply missed by their fans and community.
