Rahul Gandhi to Contest from Raebareli, KL Sharma to Take on Smriti Irani in Amethi
The Congress party has put an end to the speculation surrounding the traditional seats of the Gandhi family in Uttar Pradesh by announcing on Friday that Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi will contest from Raebareli, while Kishori Lal Sharma will fight from Amethi.
KL Sharma is gearing up to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha Election against BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani, the current BJP MP in Amethi.
Kishori Lal Sharma, hailing from Punjab’s Ludhiana, is known to have a close relationship with the Gandhi family, having served as the manager for the Congress party and Sonia Gandhi in her absence in Rae Bareli.
Sharma’s association with the Gandhi family dates back to his close ties with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Following Rajiv Gandhi’s demise in 1991, his connection with the Gandhi family grew stronger. Sharma first arrived in Amethi in 1983 and has since been actively involved in the constituency’s Congress party affairs. Notably, KL Sharma played a pivotal role in Sonia Gandhi’s first electoral victory in 1999.
After Sonia Gandhi relinquished her seat for son Rahul Gandhi in 2004 and shifted to Raebareli, Sharma took charge of managing the party’s activities in both constituencies in Uttar Pradesh—Amethi and Rae Bareli.
Amethi had long been the stronghold of the Gandhi family until 2019 when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lost the general elections to BJP’s Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi had represented Amethi in the Lower House of Parliament from 2004 until 2019.
