A contentious officiating decision in the final seconds of the UConn vs. Iowa Final Four matchup has drawn criticism from high-profile athletes, including LeBron James and Kelsey Plum, overshadowing an otherwise thrilling game and setting the stage for Iowa’s upcoming championship battle against undefeated South Carolina.
The highly anticipated Final Four clash between UConn and Iowa at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse delivered an enthralling game on Friday night, only to have its conclusion overshadowed by a contentious call in the final moments.
As UConn was down 70–69 and seeking a decisive score, Huskies senior forward Aaliyah Edwards was called for an offensive foul with just four seconds left on the clock, a decision that prevented UConn from regaining possession and ultimately led to a 71–69 defeat.
LeBron James, taking a break while the Los Angeles Lakers had a day off on Saturday, was among the notable figures to express disagreement with the late-game officiating.
“NAAAAAHHHHHH!!!” James voiced his disapproval on social media, stating, “I ain’t rolling with that call.”
LSU standout Angel Reese, whose team was previously eliminated by Iowa in the Elite Eight, also shared her thoughts on the controversial call.
Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces, who attended the semifinal game in Cleveland, sided with James and Reese in criticizing the call.
Following this victory, Iowa is set to compete against the unbeaten South Carolina in the national championship game on Sunday.
