Marvel’s newest team, the Thunderbolts, got their first spotlight moment at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. During the Marvel panel, the tight-lipped cast, joined by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, shared a few intriguing details about the upcoming film.
David Harbour, dressed as Red Guardian, humorously chastised his co-stars for not dressing up, exclaiming, “Oh my god, you guys didn’t dress up? Guys! Guys! I sent that email! We all said we were going to dress up because it was Comic-Con!” before leaving to change into his costume.
While much of the movie’s plot was kept under wraps, some key nuggets of information were shared:
- Kevin Feige clarified that the team’s name is not related to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus described her character Valentina as being after “power, control and, I would say, just generally she wants to kick ass in the Marvel universe.”
- Wyatt Russell, referring to his character John Walker, quipped, “Everyone is going to fuckin’ love me! It’s really, really, really fun to be with a group of actors that you have a good time with.”
A first clip showcased some of the high-octane stunt work promised during the panel, including a fight scene between Russell’s John Walker and Florence Pugh’s Yelena, as well as action sequences featuring the rest of the cast.
“Thunderbolts” is set to release on May 5, 2025, as the concluding film of Phase Five. Based on Kurt Busiek’s comic series, it follows a team of mostly reformed supervillains conducting covert operations for the U.S. government. Unlike DC’s “Suicide Squad,” Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” will have a PG-13 rating and is led by Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, a reformed villain turned hero.
The cast includes:
- Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier
- Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
- David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian
- Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster
- Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost
- Wyatt Russell as John Walker
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
- Lewis Pullman as Sentry
- Geraldine Viswanathan in an undisclosed role
- Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross
The film is directed by Jake Schreier, known for “Paper Towns” and “Robot and Frank,” with a script from “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo.
As the anticipation builds, fans eagerly await more insights and teasers about Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” promising another thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
