Floods and Landslides Claim 26 Lives in Indonesia, Six More Reported Missing
PADANG, Indonesia, Bollywoodfever, March 11: In West Sumatra, Indonesia, devastating floods and landslides have resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, with at least six others reported missing, officials announced on Monday.
The severe weather, which started on Thursday, has wreaked havoc across the region, damaging bridges, schools, approximately 113 hectares (280 acres) of agricultural land, and close to 700 residences, as reported by the national disaster mitigation agency (BNPB).
Visuals from the impacted areas depict the extensive damage to homes and commercial establishments, along with roads that have either collapsed into nearby rivers or are obstructed by debris and fallen trees.
The head of the BNPB made a visit to Padang, the provincial capital, on Monday to oversee the coordination and assessment of the situation and to facilitate the distribution of emergency aid.
According to a BNPB statement released on Monday, the floods and landslides have affected around 39,000 people, with 26 fatalities and 11 individuals still unaccounted for.
Abdul Malik, the regional director of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency in West Sumatra, has adjusted the number of missing persons to six and confirmed that search operations resumed on Monday.
The agency is also distributing 500 aid packages, which include tents, blankets, water purifiers, food, and hygiene supplies. With the forecast of more rainfall, there are concerns about the potential for additional floods and landslides.
The rainy season in Indonesia commenced in January, with the meteorological agency BMKG predicting that the peak would occur in the first quarter, especially on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
