Icelandic Town at Risk as Volcano Erupts Nearby
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has reported a volcanic eruption occurring in the southwestern region of the country, with semi-molten rock being expelled toward a nearby settlement for the third time in recent weeks.
The eruption commenced following a significant surge in seismic activity at 5:30 a.m. local time on Thursday.
According to a reconnaissance flight conducted by the Coast Guard, the eruption appears to be unfolding in the same vicinity as one that occurred on December 18.
Iceland, situated above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, typically experiences an eruption every four to five years. Among the most disruptive in recent memory was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which emitted massive ash clouds into the atmosphere, leading to widespread airspace closures across Europe.
