Bollywood Fever: Â Javier Aguirre was appointed head coach of Mexico’s national soccer team on Monday, succeeding Jaime Lozano, who was dismissed earlier this month following a disappointing Copa America group-stage exit, the country’s football federation (FMF) announced. This move is part of Mexico’s preparations to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and the United States.
This appointment marks Aguirre’s third tenure with the team, having previously led Mexico to the knockout stages of the 2002 and 2010 World Cups and secured the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009. Joining him as the main assistant coach is Rafael Marquez, the manager of Barcelona’s reserve team.
The FMF did not disclose the length of Aguirre’s contract. “Both are undisputed leaders with distinct personal styles,” stated Duilio Davino, the men’s national team director. “Aguirre is known for being a leader who guides and convinces his players and coaching staff through his vision and by creating bonds with his team. Rafa leads by example, supported by his experience as a high-performance footballer in Mexico and Europe.”
In his previous stints as head coach, Aguirre achieved a record of 38 wins, 12 losses, and 11 draws, making him the national team’s most successful manager for those who have led the team for at least 34 matches.
