Liverpool Parade Crash: Wife Discovered Husband’s Involvement After Seeing Her Car on TV

The wife of the man suspected in the Liverpool FC parade crash learned of the incident by spotting her car on the news. The 53-year-old remains in custody as police continue investigations.

The wife of the man suspected of deliberately driving a car into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s victory parade reportedly found out about the horrifying event when she recognized her own car on the evening news.

Neighbours in West Derby, Liverpool, say the woman was stunned to see her car being driven through the parade on TV. One told The Sun, “She first realised when she saw it was her car on the telly, when she saw it being driven at the parade. The normal police cars turned up at teatime, then the Matrix van turned up later that night.”

The 53-year-old suspect, described by neighbours as a “fantastic guy” and “a family man” with three teenage children, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and drug driving. Police were granted extra time on Wednesday to question him, and he remains in custody as of Thursday.

The incident unfolded on Monday when a vehicle ploughed into crowds gathered on Water Street to celebrate Liverpool FC’s historic second Premier League title. Seven people remain in hospital in stable condition, and Merseyside Police say a total of 79 people were injured in the crash.

The man, described as “white British” and believed to be a former company director, was arrested just hours after the incident. When police arrived at the family home, some neighbours initially assumed the house had been burgled.

One local said, “It’s completely out of character. They are a nice family, the boys are well-behaved. He is a fantastic guy. It just doesn’t make any sense… The whole thing is so sad – for his wife and children and for all those people who were hurt and injured.”

In the days since the incident, political leaders and royals have responded with messages of support.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer travelled to Liverpool on Wednesday to meet with police leadership and local officials, including Deputy Chief Constable Chris Green and Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram. “The scenes on Monday were just awful,” he said. “To see how incredible joy at an amazing achievement turned to horror in a moment.”

King Charles also extended his sympathy, acknowledging Liverpool’s famously strong sense of community as a source of comfort. The Prince and Princess of Wales issued a heartfelt statement saying they were “deeply saddened” by what happened. “What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy,” they said.
