New information emerges about two British men seen with Jay Slater, 19, before his disappearance in Tenerife. Family and friends urge British police to join search efforts.
Bollywood Fever: A local from Tenerife has shared new details about the two British men last seen with Jay Slater before his disappearance.
Jay Slater, 19, went missing on Monday morning after leaving a three-day music festival with two other men. Attempting to walk back to the south of the island, Jay called his friend Lucy Mae Law, informing her that his phone battery was at 1 percent.
Araceli, who works near the rental property, stated: “I never saw the missing boy, but I know people saw him walking on his own. I saw the two British men who stayed here. They came in for cafe con leche a couple of times. One was aged about 40. The other one was slightly younger,” she told the Mirror.
She confirmed: “The police have spoken to them both [the British men]. They arrived on Saturday and were due to stay until Monday, but they left on Tuesday.” When asked if they had to remain to be interviewed by the police, she responded: “I don’t know.”
The holiday home was rented by the two men who were with Jay before he vanished. Both men have since checked out and flown back to the UK. Jay had posted a photo of himself, cigarette in hand, on the steps of the property shortly before his disappearance.
Lucy Mae Law, Jay’s friend, raised the alarm after receiving a call from him around 8 am on Monday. Jay, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, told her he was walking back to their accommodation in the south of the island, feeling thirsty and with only 1 percent battery left on his phone. Jay’s phone went dead shortly afterward, and his last known location was traced to the Rural de Teno area, a mountainous region of the island. His parents and brother have since flown out to assist with the search.
Lucy has expressed dissatisfaction with the efforts of the Civil Guard and is demanding British police help search for her friend. Speaking to the Mirror, she said: “We need British police here. I just want to find my mate. He’s been missing three days. It’s not looking good now. We feel as though it’s down to us to find him and that we’re doing more than the police.”
Police have been conducting searches in a rural mountainous area in the northwest of the island, near the village of Masca, where he was last traced. Since then, more information has come to light about the two men he was last seen with on Sunday night, as images of the rental property, Casa Abuela Tina, where he was reportedly staying, have surfaced.
