“In an interview with Women’s Health for their April 10 cover story, Megan expressed, “For a long stretch, I was not treated as a human being. It seemed like I was perpetually the life of the party to others, and I witnessed how they would elevate me only to tear me down later, leaving them perplexed about what they actually expected from me. Being a Black woman, especially one with a darker complexion, it felt like there was an anticipation for me to endure hardships and still maintain dignity. Yet, I’m only human.”

The challenges of being in the limelight, where she was constantly under scrutiny, compounded her struggles. Megan described how, often, she would be in tears before having to perform, torn between not wanting to disappoint her fans and not feeling up to the task.

She also recalled grappling with severe depression post-incident, stating, “I found it hard to even leave my bed. I stayed secluded in my room, avoided any light, and shunned the daylight. Recognizing that I wasn’t in my normal state took time, but acknowledging my depression was a pivotal moment, facilitated by speaking to a therapist.

In her journey to recovery, Megan emphasized the importance of severing connections with detrimental individuals, stepping away from social media, and focusing on physical activity to channel her energy positively.

Now, at 29, Megan is in a better mental space and is keen to align her physical appearance with how she feels internally. She hinted at an upcoming album release, aiming to create music that remains authentic to her essence and her narrative. She likened herself to a flower, albeit one with thorns, symbolizing her resilience and complexity.

In July 2020, Megan disclosed via Instagram her hospitalization following gunshot injuries and the subsequent removal of the bullets through surgery. She opened up about the pain inflicted by disparaging remarks, tweeting about the lack of protection for Black women and the internal conflict of safeguarding others’ feelings at the expense of their own well-being.

Tory, legally known as Daystar Peterson, was convicted in December 2022 for several charges including assault with an automatic firearm. He received a 10-year sentence in August after pleading not guilty, though he acknowledged his misconduct on the night of the incident during his sentencing, according to the Associated Press, expressing full responsibility for his actions.
