Miami Beach Commission revokes “Diddy Day” honor for Sean “Diddy” Combs following sexual assault allegations and a federal investigation.
Bollywood Fever: The Miami Beach Commission has officially rescinded “Diddy Day” for the city of Miami in light of recent sexual assault allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs.
According to a Miami Herald report published on June 27, the Miami Beach Commission decided to revoke the proclamation that declared October 13, 2016, as “Sean Diddy Combs Day.” This decision comes three months after federal authorities raided Diddy’s South Beach mansion as part of a sex-trafficking investigation.
Diddy originally received the honor in 2016 from then-Mayor Philip Levine and the City Commission during the 3rd annual Revolt Music Conference. The move to cancel Diddy Day was largely influenced by a graphic 2016 video leaked to the media, which showed Diddy assaulting his then-ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. Diddy has since issued an apology for his behavior depicted in the video.
“Upon reflection, the Mayor and City Commission have determined that recognizing October 13, 2016, as ‘Sean Diddy Combs Day’ is no longer in harmony with the city’s values of safety, community well-being, and respect, and wish to rescind the proclamation,” read a statement from the Commission board.
Diddy Loses Multiple Honorary Recognitions
The Miami Beach Commission is not the only institution to revoke honors previously bestowed upon Diddy.
Last month, Diddy returned an honorary key to the city of New York. He had received the honor in September 2023 for his contributions to music. However, in early June, Mayor Eric Adams sent a letter to Diddy requesting the return of the key, expressing that he was “deeply disturbed” by the leaked Cassie video and strongly condemned the actions shown. Fabien Levy, Deputy Mayor for Communications, informed XXL that Diddy returned the key on June 10.
Additionally, Howard University in Washington D.C. has revoked Diddy’s honorary degree. The Hilltop, the university’s collegiate newspaper, reported that the Board of Trustees also voted to terminate a pledge agreement made in 2023 by the Sean Combs Foundation. The foundation had failed to fulfill a $1 million donation, which has since been returned to Diddy.
The series of revocations underscore the significant impact that recent allegations and past actions have had on Diddy’s legacy and his previously recognized contributions to various communities.
