Optimism Plans Brief Pause of ETH Withdrawals for Testing Incident Response System
Optimism Ecosystem Overview:
Optimism encompasses a network of Layer 2 chains collectively referred to as the Superchain, which employ optimistic rollups to lower transaction costs for decentralized applications (dapps). Governed by a DAO known as the Optimism Collective, this ecosystem includes flagship networks such as the OP Mainnet, alongside others like Base and Zora.
Optimism Plans Brief Pause of ETH Withdrawals
The Layer 2 network Optimism (OP -0.54%) is planning to halt ether (ETH) withdrawals for one hour on Feb. 15 to conduct a test of its upgraded incident response system.
According to an announcement on Discord, withdrawals of ETH from the Layer 2 network to the Ethereum mainnet will be temporarily paused during this period. However, deposits from the mainnet to the Layer 2 network and regular transactions on the network will remain unaffected.
The primary objective of this test is to strengthen the ability to respond to security incidents across various chains within the Optimism ecosystem in a coordinated manner.
Presently, the incident response system includes an on-chain pause specifically for Ethereum withdrawals. The new enhancement will introduce a Superchain-wide pause, extending to withdrawals for tokens and NFTs across Optimism and any Optimism-based chains that opt in.
“This upgrade is not only focused on bolstering individual chains but also on leveraging the combined security intelligence of the entire Superchain,” noted OP Labs when announcing the upgraded system on Jan. 25.
The upgraded feature is currently operational on its testing network, and the one-hour pause will serve to validate its functionality in a live environment.
