“I really don’t know why I did not do Maine Pyar Kiya. Director Suraj Barjatya had called me. I did not go. The lead actress, Bhagyashree, was already selected. The lead actor wasn’t final. Barjatya wanted to launch me. I looked good those days. But I really do not know why I did not take the offer. I am not a fool to let an opportunity like this pass. People say I didn’t do it for my love for theatre but that is not true. I should have done it,”

Speaking at Sahitya Aaj Tak, now on at Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi, Piyush Mishra added that he did not regret missing out on the romantic drama Maine Pyar Kiya. “I don’t think about what could have happened if I had taken that up.”

Talking about Gangs of Wasseypur,  he said he never imagined he would go to Mumbai post-40 and become successful. “I got success at 46. I started getting more work.”

Talking about his temperament, Piyush Mishra said he did have a problem with being normal and accepted. “Unless you have a little bit of madness in you, you can’t create. People loved me for that madness. I am better now. I am calm and I don’t think people notice me as much.”

Piyush Mishra said he stays away from controversy, for obvious reasons. “These days I like everything. I like everyone. I like both Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. I accept everyone. I speak less and I stay away from controversies. Nothing is being created in this state of mind and I am not able to write anything new.”

Did you know he is managed by Rahul Gandhi? Well, not that Rahul. “His name is Rahul Gandhi really. So when someone asks me for something, I ask them to get in touch with Rahul Gandhi,” he quipped.
