Sabrina Carpenter Reflects on Her First ‘Real Heartbreak’ Two Years Ago

Sabrina Carpenter recently discussed the challenges she faced during her most difficult breakup in 2021, which coincided with her rumored split from Joshua Bassett.

“I was heartbroken two years ago. I was in a really, really different mental place,” Carpenter, 24, revealed in a conversation with Zane Lowe on the April 11 episode of Apple 1’s New Music Daily. “For me, that was truly my first heartbreak. And so I think when you’re going through something like that, you question everything about yourself and you take it really personal.”

Following the breakup, Carpenter experienced a profound questioning of her self-assurance and her interactions with others. “My instincts about myself and my ability to move throughout a room without questioning if people’s opinions are more important than your own,” were significantly impacted, she explained.

Her recent song “Espresso” reflects her emotional journey post-breakup and illustrates her current state of mind. “That’s why even just ‘my give a f–ks are on vacation,’ it’s such a simple funny line, but so much of this song really kind of gets to a place where it really measures up with where I’m at right now, and you have to go through life to get there,” she commented, noting, “I think there’s a big difference between two years ago and now, but I’m just having fun now, which I think is the biggest difference.”

Speculation about Carpenter and Bassett’s relationship began in June 2020 after they were seen together at a Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles. Their relationship drew attention partly because many fans believed Bassett was previously involved with Olivia Rodrigo.

While neither Rodrigo, 21, nor Carpenter confirmed any romantic details, both seemed to address their feelings in their music. Rodrigo’s debut single, “Driver’s License,” released in January 2021, alluded to a “blonde” who was “so much older than me.” In the same month, Carpenter responded with her song “Skin,” which included the lyrics “Maybe we could’ve been friends / If I met you in another life” and a reference to Rodrigo’s hit, “Don’t drive yourself insane.”

Sabrina Carpenter addressed rumors about her song being a diss track during a February 2021 appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.”

“People will make a narrative out of something always, you know?” she remarked. “I think this was like a really interesting song for people to kind of misinterpret and make it into something that it wasn’t really supposed to be in the first place.”

Later in the year, Carpenter released “Skinny Dipping,” a song reflecting her journey towards finding closure after a breakup. Following the release, she hinted at her single status in a TikTok post, using audio that stated, “I’m searching for love. I’m recently single … I think … and I’m looking for someone I can spend the rest of my life with.”

Recently, Carpenter has been romantically linked to actor Barry Keoghan, with reports of their connection emerging in December 2023.
