Sony Says: PS5 Entering ‘The Latter Stage of Its Life Cycle’,

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 is now entering “the latter stage of its life cycle” following disappointing sales figures.

Despite an initial target of 25 million units sold by March 31, 2025, Sony has revised this down to 21 million due to lower-than-expected sales during the crucial holiday quarter in 2023.

Sales for the third quarter ending December 31, 2023, reached 8.2 million units, up from the previous year’s 7.1 million, but fell short of Sony’s ambitious goal.

Naomi Matsuoka, Sony’s senior vice president, anticipates a decline in PS5 sales starting from the next fiscal year, which begins in April 2024.

Matsuoka emphasized the need to strike a balance between profitability and sales, signaling a shift in strategy for the console.

Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has sold 54.7 million units in just over three years.

As it approaches its fourth anniversary, Sony’s acknowledgment of its position in the latter half of its life cycle prompts speculation about the next-generation console, the PS6.

Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, Physint, could potentially be a launch title for the PS6.

With development expected to commence after Death Stranding 2, which is slated for release in 2025, Physint may not hit the market until 2026 at the earliest, possibly later.

If historical release patterns repeat, the PS6 could debut in November 2027.

Furthermore, Sony has announced that major existing PlayStation franchise games, including sequels in the God of War and Spider-Man series, will not be released before April 2025.
