Heartbreaking Loss: Beloved Pennsylvania News Anchor, Emily Matson, Fatally Struck by Train in Apparent Suicide

The devastating incident occurred early Monday morning in Fairview Township, where Emily Matson, a cherished member of the “Erie News Now” team for two decades, lost her life after being struck by a train. The Erie County Coroner’s Office has officially ruled her death as a suicide.

Emily’s last appearance on air was Friday night, and news of her tragic passing was shared by the station. Scott MacDowell, the news director, paid tribute to Emily’s legacy, stating, “Emily was a shining light in our newsroom, delivering news with a passion and love she had for the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania.”

Expressing condolences, MacDowell added, “We loved Emily dearly, and our hearts go out to the Matson family and her husband Ryan at this time.”

Sara Tonks, a fellow meteorologist and colleague, shared the grief felt throughout the newsroom, reminiscing about the countless times she would stop by Emily’s desk for conversation. Emily Matson, who dedicated two decades to journalism, leaves behind a void in the hearts of those who knew and worked with her. She was 42 years old.
