Varada Sethu Joins “Doctor Who” as New Companion Alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson

Varada Sethu has been cast as a new companion in “Doctor Who” Season 2, joining Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. Set to air in 2025, the trio will embark on cosmic adventures together, bringing fresh dynamics to the beloved series.

Varada Sethu has officially joined the cast of “Doctor Who” Season 2, stepping in as a new companion alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. Contrary to earlier reports, she will not be replacing the current companion, Millie Gibson, who debuted as Ruby Sunday in the show’s Christmas special. Instead, all three actors will explore the cosmos together in the upcoming season, which is currently being filmed and is set to premiere in 2025 on Disney+ globally and on the BBC in the U.K.

Sethu, previously seen in Disney+’s “Star Wars” spinoff “Andor,” as well as “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Annika,” and “Strike Back,” expressed her excitement about joining the iconic series. “I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honor to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole ‘Doctor Who’ family — because that is what they are — for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home,” she remarked. “I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with. This is SO much fun!”

Russell T Davies, the showrunner, writer, and executive producer, shared his enthusiasm about reuniting with Sethu, having previously worked with her on a BBC production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “It’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS. Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side — we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!” he stated.

The premiere of Gatwa’s first season as the Doctor is scheduled for May 10 at 7 p.m. ET on Disney+ in the U.S. and worldwide, excluding the U.K., featuring a rerun of the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road” followed by two new episodes. U.K. fans can stream the show starting at midnight on May 11 via BBC iPlayer, with a broadcast on BBC One later that day. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly on Disney+ every Friday and on Saturdays via the BBC and BBC iPlayer.

“Doctor Who” is produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and the BBC. The series also boasts a team of executive producers including Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.
