Former UCCS Student Deemed Competent to Stand Trial in Double Murder Case

Nicholas Jordan, accused of a double homicide at UCCS, has been ruled competent to stand trial after conflicting evaluations. The case proceeds with a preliminary hearing scheduled.

Bollywood Fever: The case of Nicholas Jordan, a former University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) student accused of murdering his roommate and another woman inside a campus dormitory, continues to advance as he returns to court on Tuesday.

The proceedings have faced delays due to Jordan’s defense team repeatedly arguing that the 26-year-old is incompetent to stand trial for the double homicide.

Two separate competency evaluations yielded conflicting results, with the first declaring him incompetent and the second finding him mentally stable.

The forensic psychiatrist conducting the second evaluation noted that Jordan admitted to exaggerating symptoms of mental illness during his initial competency test.

Despite these conflicting evaluations, the judge has ruled that Jordan is “competent enough” to face trial.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of Friday, February 16, when the bodies of Samuel Knopp, 24, and Celie Rain Montgomery, 26, were discovered in a dorm room after campus police responded to reports of gunshots.

The university campus was placed on lockdown for approximately an hour and a half as authorities ensured there was no active shooter threat.

It was later determined to be an isolated incident involving the suspect and the two victims. Jordan was identified as the alleged gunman on the day of the incident, but he was not apprehended until the following Monday.

Arrest documents reveal that witnesses reported ongoing conflicts between Knopp and Jordan, who were roommates.

Jordan had allegedly been reported multiple times for unsafe living conditions and for smoking marijuana and cigarettes in the dorm room.

In the weeks leading up to the murders, tensions escalated between the two, culminating in a heated argument over a bag of trash.

“Mr. Knopp collected [the bag of trash] and placed [it] near Mr. Jordan’s door,” the arrest papers state. “Mr. Jordan threatened Mr. Knopp and told him that he would ‘kill him’ and there would be consequences if Mr. Jordan was asked to take out the trash again.”

This incident alarmed other students on campus, leading to a petition demanding that university officials increase security measures.

Jordan’s preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
