Orsted and Iberdrola Secure Major Wins in UK Renewable Energy Auction
Orsted and Iberdrola win significant contracts in the UK’s latest renewable energy auction, advancing the government’s goal to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2030.
Bollywood Fever: Orsted and Iberdrola emerged as key winners in the latest UK auction for renewable power, which supported a record number of projects, the government announced on Tuesday.
This auction marks a significant step toward the Labour government’s ambitious plan to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2030, requiring a substantial increase in renewable power capacity, particularly from wind and solar energy.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the auction’s success, stating, “Today we have now achieved a record-setting round for enough renewable power for 11 million homes, essential to give energy security to families across the country.”

The auction is set to back projects with a combined capacity of nearly 10 gigawatts, predominantly from offshore wind and solar projects.
To incentivize investment in these new projects, the government is offering renewable project developers the opportunity to bid for Contracts for Difference (CfDs), which are government-backed price guarantees for the electricity produced.
Under this scheme, if wholesale electricity prices fall below the agreed minimum, the government covers the difference. Conversely, if prices exceed the minimum, producers must pay back the difference to the government.
A total of 131 renewable projects won contracts in this round, with Orsted’s Hornsea 4 offshore wind project securing the largest contract by capacity. Iberdrola also secured contracts for its East Anglia Two and East Anglia Three offshore wind projects.
The UK government aims to expand the country’s offshore wind capacity to 60 GW by 2030, up from around 15 GW currently.
The results announced on Tuesday are from Britain’s sixth CfD auction, which has now become an annual event.
This auction represents a critical milestone in the UK’s journey toward a more sustainable and secure energy future, with leading companies like Orsted and Iberdrola playing pivotal roles in the transition.
