The View Panel Discusses Ariana Grande’s Responsibility to Address Nickelodeon Allegations

Following the release of the controversial documentary Quiet on Set, which levied serious accusations about a harmful work culture at Nickelodeon, there’s been a heated discussion regarding the responsibility of celebrities to denounce such allegations.

During the episode of The View on Friday, March 22, the co-hosts debated whether Ariana Grande, who was a prominent figure on Nickelodeon through her roles in Victorious from 2010 to 2013 and its sequel, Sam & Cat, until 2014, should publicly address the allegations against the network and producer Dan Schneider. 

Notably, Ariana Grande has not commented on the accusations nor appears in the documentary.

Sunny Hostin insisted that Ariana Grande, now 30, should take a stand. “She’s an adult now,” Hostin remarked. “Is silence complicity or not?”

Hostin’s stance sparked disagreement among the panel, especially from Sara Haines, who highlighted the lack of evidence that Grande was aware of any misconduct during her time at the network.

Haines argued against oversimplification, emphasizing the difficulty of retrospectively acknowledging such issues. “I think that oversimplifies it,” Haines explained. She suggested that individuals are now having to reevaluate past experiences with new insights, which may be challenging to process.

Alyssa Farah Griffin also sided with Haines, suggesting that the focus on celebrities like Grande and Josh Peck to publicly address the issue could overshadow the more crucial aspect of supporting the victims directly.

Drake Bell, who shared in the documentary his experience of sexual abuse by a former Nickelodeon staff member, mentioned that his Drake & Josh co-star Josh Peck reached out to him privately after the documentary’s release, highlighting a form of support that Farah Griffin deemed significant.

Ana Navarro echoed the sentiment, advocating for private support over public statements, especially to prevent further trauma to the victims.

Despite the pushback, Hostin maintained her viewpoint, arguing that public figures like Grande have an ethical obligation to use their platforms for advocacy and support for survivors.

“If you are public and you have a platform, it’s an honor to have a platform,” Hostin emphasized. “It’s an honor to have a voice. And you should use the voice for good and you should use the voice to help survivors.”
