Air India Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Siberia Due to Potential Cargo Hold Issue

An Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco made an emergency landing in Siberia due to a potential issue in the cargo hold. Arrangements are being made for a replacement flight.

Bollywood Fever: An Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco made a precautionary landing in the Russian region of Siberia on Friday after the crew detected a potential issue in the cargo hold area. This marks the second time in just over a year that an Air India flight on this route has made an unscheduled landing in Russia.

Many U.S. and European Union airlines avoid Russian airspace due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, Air India continues to fly over Russia, providing a time and cost advantage on U.S. routes.

The Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying 225 passengers and 19 flight crew, landed safely at Krasnoyarsk International Airport. Air India announced on the social media platform X that it is arranging a replacement flight to San Francisco.

Russia’s civil aviation agency, Rosaviatsiya, reported on Telegram that the aircraft taxied to a parking spot after landing, with no signs of fire or smoke onboard. The precautionary landing was due to an activated smoke detector, as confirmed by Krasnoyarsk International Airport.

Air India plans to dispatch a replacement aircraft from Delhi, expected to arrive around 2 p.m. local time (0700 GMT), to pick up the stranded passengers.

In June 2023, another Air India Boeing plane on the same route was stranded for a day in Russia’s remote Magadan airport due to a technical issue, causing passengers, including U.S. citizens, to be housed in makeshift accommodations until a replacement aircraft arrived.

The rerouting of air traffic has been a significant challenge for many airlines following the reciprocal airspace bans imposed during the Ukraine conflict. United Airlines, for example, has had to cancel many of its non-stop U.S.-India flights due to these airspace restrictions.

Boeing and a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department deferred comments on the incident to Air India.
