Apple Enables Developers to Directly Distribute Apps from Their Websites
Bollywoodfever, March 12: Apple has announced that starting this spring, software developers can offer their apps directly to European Union users via their own websites.
This move is in response to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that Apple allows alternative app stores on its devices and gives developers the option to bypass Apple’s in-app payment system, which can impose fees of up to 30%.
In a recent blog post, Apple detailed how it will enhance flexibility for developers in the EU, including a novel approach to web-based app distribution.
Apple plans to grant authorized developers access to specific APIs to support web distribution, system integration, and user app backup and restoration, among other functionalities.
Additionally, Apple is opening the door for developers to establish their own app marketplaces, focusing exclusively on their applications.
Developers will also have the freedom to design their in-app offers, discounts, and transactions directly on their websites, stepping away from Apple’s standardized templates.
These updates are part of Apple’s ongoing adjustments amidst criticism over its adherence to the DMA, which carries penalties of up to 10% of global turnover for non-compliance.
