Assam Floods: Grim Situation Persists with Three More Fatalities

Bollywood Fever, Assam, India :Assam’s flood situation remains dire as three more fatalities have been reported, and new areas have been inundated, though the number of affected people has decreased slightly, according to an official bulletin released on June 2.

Rivers in Spate and Relief Efforts Underway

Despite the marginal decrease in the number of affected individuals, rivers continue to overflow, forcing people to seek refuge in relief camps across various regions. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin indicated that 5,35,246 people across 13 districts are still impacted by the floods.

Decline in Affected Population

On Saturday, the affected population stood at 6,01,642 across 10 districts, showing a slight improvement. However, the flood’s toll is significant, with two deaths reported in Cachar and one in Nagaon, raising the total number of casualties due to floods and storms since May 28 to 18.

Major Rivers Above Danger Levels

Three major rivers – Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara – continue to flow above the danger mark, exacerbating the flood situation, as stated in the ASDMA bulletin.

Most Affected Districts

Nagaon remains the hardest-hit district, with 3,03,567 people affected, followed by Cachar with 1,09,798 and Hojai with 86,382 affected individuals.

Relief Camps and Rescue Operations

More than 39,000 displaced people are currently sheltered in 193 relief camps across various districts. Additionally, 82 relief distribution centers are operational to provide essential supplies to those in need.

Collaborative Rescue and Relief Efforts

Rescue and relief operations are being conducted by multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration. Medical teams have also been deployed to assist the affected populations.

Infrastructure Damage

The floods have caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and other properties, across various districts, adding to the challenges faced by the affected communities.
