Bitfinex’s chief technology officer, Paolo Ardoino, is expressing doubt regarding claims circulating on social media that the exchange experienced a large-scale data breach, as asserted by hacking group FSOCIETY on April 26.
“We’re conducting a thorough analysis of our systems, and as of now, no breach has been identified,” Ardoino stated on X, highlighting that fewer than a quarter of the email addresses allegedly taken from Bitfinex’s servers correspond to legitimate users.
The hacking group FSOCIETY, which emulates the fictitious hacking group from the TV series “Mr. Robot,” asserted successful hacks on various targets on its dark web homepage on April 26. These included Rutgers University, consulting firm SBC Global, and the cryptocurrency exchange “Coinmoma,” likely a typo for Coinmama.
However, none of the companies reportedly targeted by FSOCIETY have publicly acknowledged a significant data breach or the payment of any ransom. Ardoino mentioned that they have not received any direct communication from the hacking group.
