Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira has been sent home from the Olympics after sneaking out of the athletes’ village with her boyfriend, Gabriel Santos, to enjoy a night out in Paris.

Paris, Bollywood Fever: Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was sent home from the Olympics after sneaking out of the athletes’ village to spend a night with her boyfriend, fellow swimmer Gabriel Santos. The 22-year-old, a member of Brazil’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, was caught flouting the rules on the night of July 26, according to Brazilian media reports.

The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) attempted to discipline Vieira, but she reportedly reacted abusively, leading to her immediate booking on a flight back home. Santos, who had already been eliminated in the heats of the men’s 4×100 freestyle, received a reprimand after apologizing.

Known as the golden couple of Brazilian swimming, Vieira and Santos boast a significant social media following, with their Instagram posts showcasing training sessions, sightseeing in Uruguay, and relaxed moments with their fluffy dog. Vieira has 25,000 followers, while Santos has 15,000.

Both swimmers hail from Sao Paulo and are part of the Esporte Clube Pinheiros, a prominent Brazilian athletics club with many athletes at the Paris Olympics. Vieira made her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games. She began her impressive swimming career as a child, inspired by her firefighter parents’ trips to the sea. Initially starting in open water sports, she later mastered pool swimming. In 2018, she won a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and was part of the quartet in Tokyo in 2021.

The incident occurred amidst a vibrant backdrop of the Olympics opening ceremony, which featured an impressive parade on the Seine and performances by artists like Lady Gaga. Despite the rainy night, spirits remained high as hundreds of thousands of fans enjoyed the spectacular event, which included a fashion show on a bridge and trick performances on bikes.

The repercussions for Vieira and Santos highlight the strict protocols in place for athletes during the Olympics, aimed at ensuring their safety and focus during the competition.
