China‘s envoy to the United States emphasized the need for both nations to collaborate to enhance their relationship amidst ongoing significant challenges.
The ambassador, speaking at a Harvard University forum, stressed the importance of establishing a mutual understanding to ensure relations progress on a stable and sustainable trajectory, according to a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Washington released on Sunday.
This comes ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s upcoming trip to China for discussions that will cover various topics including the Middle East crisis, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and tensions in the South China Sea.
“China does not gamble on the United States to lose, interfere in its internal affairs, or interfere in the U.S. election, and is willing to be a partner and friend with the United States,” Xie stated during the event.
He also posed a question: “If the United States continues to interfere in China’s internal affairs and harm China’s interests on issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Tibet, and the South China Sea, how can we maintain the bottom line of bilateral relations no matter how many ‘guardrails’ are set up?“
Recent months have seen tensions in bilateral relations rise due to several factors, including trade disputes, security allegations, confrontations in the South China Sea, and the strengthening of U.S. alliances with Japan and the Philippines, which has been criticized by Beijing as “bloc politics” and forming “exclusive circles.”
