Gayle King’s son, William Bumpus Jr., and his fiancée, Elise Smith, celebrated their wedding in a private ceremony at Oprah Winfrey’s home on Sunday.
“Oprah, of course, was there because it was at Oprah’s house,” King, 69, mentioned on “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday, humorously noting that “it’s always nice” when the billionaire “lets us use” her estate in Montecito, Calif., as the price is “feasible.”
Winfrey, 70, played a significant role in planning the event and organized a fireworks display to mark the couple’s departure at the end of the celebration.
King donned a blue one-shoulder dress for the occasion, sharing that “the color of the day was blue,” while Smith wore a white strapless Amsale wedding gown for her walk down the aisle.
The couple wrote their own vows, a highlight for King.
“At one point, Will said, ‘I know the man I am, but with you, I know the man I want to be.’ That gave me goosebumps,” she recalled.
King expressed her admiration for the unique love between her 37-year-old son and his new wife.
“You go to weddings, and everyone’s in love, but there’s something about these two that I thought was very epic and it was next-level,” she gushed.
“So, it’s always nice when you can see your own children happy and married.”
The TV host noted that the wedding was “strictly for family” and shared a positive interaction with her ex-husband, William Bumpus, and his girlfriend.
“I said hi and hugged and everything,” she said of her former spouse, to whom she was married from 1982 to 1993. “It was lovely. It was all great.”
King described the “beautiful day” as “filled with love” and mentioned that the newlyweds plan to host a “big dance party” with friends at a later date.
Winfrey was also present when Bumpus Jr. proposed to Smith in February, discreetly capturing the moment her BFF’s son got down on one knee in a garden.
King’s daughter, Kirby Bumpus, was also present for the engagement.
