Georgia Deputy Brandon Cunningham, 30, was tragically killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic dispute in Hiram. The suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Bollywood Fever: A Georgia sheriff’s deputy was tragically shot and killed in an ambush while responding to a reported domestic dispute in Hiram, Georgia, on Saturday evening.
The incident unfolded when two deputies arrived at the scene around 6 p.m., only to be met with a barrage of gunfire from a suspect inside a home in a subdivision, according to Major Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, opened fire on the officers, striking Deputy Brandon Cunningham, 30, who later died from his injuries at a hospital, Sheriff Gary Gulledge confirmed during a briefing. The suspect also fired numerous rounds at other officers but Cunningham was the only one hit.
“Tonight, we’ve lost a hero,” Sheriff Gulledge said, expressing the profound impact of the loss on the department. “It’s going to be a tough time for all of us and all of our guys.”
The suspect was found dead at the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Henson reported.
A woman involved in the domestic dispute had left the scene but returned while police were still present. She had also been shot and was transported to a hospital in the Atlanta area, where she is listed in stable condition.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will lead the investigation into the shooting. It remains unclear whether any officers returned fire during the incident.
Major Henson described the situation as a “tremendously tragic” event, noting that this marks the first time the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has lost an officer in the line of duty.
“Our hearts are broken,” Henson added, acknowledging the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the department. “You see us holding it together, but there is already heartache, there are already tears.”
