Gravity Launches the Fastest Public EV Charging Station in New York City
Bollywoodfever, March 4: Gravity Mobility, a startup supported by Google in the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure sector, has introduced the United States’ quickest publicly available charging station, targeting fleet operators.
The company announced that it is making 24 of its 500 kilowatt (kW) chargers available in New York, capable of delivering up to 2,400 miles of range per hour, or 200 miles in just five minutes.
With the ability to produce and set up thousands of chargers annually, Gravity is expanding its network beyond its initial location in Midtown Manhattan. “We have the capacity to match or exceed the number of (Tesla) Superchargers installed each year, expanding our network without hindrance,” said Moshe Cohen, CEO of Gravity, in a statement to Reuters.
Tesla has established compatibility with numerous automakers, including Ford and General Motors, providing access to its extensive network of over 15,000 chargers. However, Gravity foresees the challenge of scaling up to match Tesla’s reach.
To further grow its high-speed charging network across the country, Gravity is planning additional fundraising efforts this year. “Our immediate goal is to go national, and there’s significant interest in our expansion plans,” Cohen added.
Gravity’s charging units are notably compact, about the size of a carry-on suitcase, unlike the larger installations typical of automakers and other EV charging providers.
Currently, most EVs can charge at a maximum speed of 350 kW, though upcoming models are expected to support even faster charging speeds.
In comparison, ChargePoint recently announced its Express Plus Power Link 2000, capable of charging two vehicles at once with up to 500 kW, while Tesla’s Superchargers peak at 250 kW.
